How many teeth should my child have?

Children get teeth at different times and loose them at different times. First teeth usually appear (erupt) between 6 and 10 months. 6 months is the average however, for some children, teeth appear as early as three months. For others, they don’t come through the gums until around 12 months.

Baby teeth usually appear in order, although sometimes teeth will appear out of order. The central lower teeth are usually the first to appear, then the upper central teeth. Your child will probably have all 20 baby teeth by the time they are two or three years old.

An adult has 32 teeth (including wisdom teeth) and start replacing the baby teeth between the ages of 5 and 6 years. If you are concerned about your child's teeth erupting late or in the wrong position it's best to consult with your Dentist or Dental Therapist or Dental Hygienist. Usually there is nothing to be concerned about, but a professional will easily check the teeth and reassure you.
