Parents are usually surprised when they discover how old a child can be before they can brush their teeth by themselves. Parents and carers need to brush children’s teeth up until about age 8 - 10 years old. Allowing a child to begin brushing is useful however an adult should complete brushing all teeth as children up to this age do not have the dexterity to brush correctly.
It’s a great idea if the child has a turn first at brushing their teeth with the parent finishing the brushing. That way the parent can check the brushing has been done correctly for all teeth.
No toothpaste is required for children until they are able to spit out successfully. When children do start using toothpaste, only the smallest amount is required, about the size of a grain of rice.
